The Sutton Place Hotel will play host to IABC Edmonton’s Capital Awards Gala – a sleek, modern venue in the heart of downtown. Enough to initiate an onslaught of wardrobe worries? Before you get too overwhelmed at the thought of what to wear, we’ve got some suggestions to alleviate your sartorial stress!
While we certainly love a good theme, and the Science of Communication definitely piques the interest of our inner mad scientists, this year we’ll caution against expressing it literally through your clothing choice (please, no lab coats!). You could opt to embrace the season with a dress or top in a fun, colourful floral print (“florals, for spring…groundbreaking” – we know). Sometimes things are cliché for a reason, they just work!
If you’re heading straight to the gala from work (thank you indoor pedway), an easy-transition outfit is your best bet and when planning it out, keep the three-piece rule in mind. What’s this three-piece rule you ask? Well it’s the science of fashion, of course. Two of your pieces are foundational (think a great pair of pants or a skirt paired with a neutral top) and your final “hero piece” is the one that easily swaps out (think classic blazer by day, replaced by fun robe-style kimono or chunky statement jewellery by night).
For all you gentleman, consider spicing up your everyday suit with some bold colour. Mix and match your neutral trousers with a sports jacket in a fresh colour like forest green or cobalt blue. If that feels like a stretch and you prefer coordination, swap in a fun shirt with a bold pattern.
No matter where you draw inspiration for your event attire, the most important thing is that it reflects your personality, after all, this event is in celebration of you – our leaders, groundbreakers and innovators.
