Hello IABC Edmonton members!
I’m writing this – my first message as chapter president – as I indulge in Thanksgiving leftovers and the snow from our first winter storm continues to fly. I love this cozy time of year and it’s got me thinking about how thankful I am for the opportunity to welcome you to another year at IABC Edmonton. For me, Thanksgiving is all about appreciating the people in my life. The talented crew behind our chapter’s activities are certainly a part of that.
While our official board year starts in July, it’s through the Summer months and into the Fall that our new and returning board members work on their plans for the year. We’ve put together an incredible, accomplished team of volunteer directors to do this work and I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to collaborate with them. We’ve done some restructuring that allows us to focus on strategy and governance while also ensuring that we continue to offer the professional development and networking opportunities that we know you want more of. It also enables us to give more volunteers the opportunity to experience the boardroom table, something that has been important in my career development and that I hope is a great experience for our new directors.
Our commitment to you this year is to hone in on how we can support you throughout your career in the communications sector. You can expect our membership team to reach out to you in some capacity, whether it’s to get your thoughts following an event, to participate in an informal focus group or to complete our local chapter survey. We’re focused on learning as much as we can about what you want from your membership with IABC.
We’re planning to introduce new opportunities for members to network, learn and socialize. We’re also looking at the opportunity to host a Certified Management Professional (CMP) certification exam, and will be updating our chapter’s visual identity to align with the new International standard. Year 2 of our mentorship program is sure to be a success with more than 40 mentees signed up. We’re still looking for senior communicators to give 1 hour per month to help shape the next generation in our industry. If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to give back, this might just be it!
Back to giving thanks! You may have heard that October is Member Month. If you’re due for a renewal, it’s your opportunity to save 10% on International dues, plus, you’ll be entered to win one of two Amazon e-gift cards for $500 USD. Members in good standing also have the chance to earn a $10 USD Amazing e-gift card for referring a new member (there’s no limit on the number you can earn). It’s our way of saying “cheers” for spreading the word about the value of IABC!
