Like Walking Through a Dream: Capital Awards Gala 2016 Recap

Adriana Amelio | June 19, 2016

Cotton candy, champagne, plush setting and hilarious hosts – this year’s gala had it all!

On May 26, 2016, IABC Edmonton recognized the best and brightest Edmonton communicators during the 2016 Capital Awards at the Chateau Lacombe. After a record setting 127 entries, we handed out 14 Awards of Merit and 42 Awards of Excellence during the evening – winners spanned all corners of the industry including submissions from government divisions, agencies, corporate branches and student projects. A full list of winners can be found on the IABC Edmonton website, so be sure to congratulate them!

In addition to our project awards, IABC recognized three very talented individuals with our Awards of Distinction.

Crystal Komanchuk, the 2015-2016 IABC Edmonton Student Development Chair, was recognized as our Inspired Member of the Year. Longtime member Sue Heuman of Focus Communications was awarded Inspired Communicator of the Year, as well as an extra bottle of champagne from her very proud husband. In addition to these outstanding members in our field, IABC also recognized a non-communicator who shows exemplary skills and respect to the craft; Danny Turner of Organic Box Edmonton was the recipient of the 2016 Inspired Leader of the Year award.

Attendees were guided through a dream evening designed by Edmonton’s own FREE Branding & Digital, brought to life through the inspired work of River City Events, and hosted by Julian Faid & Leif Ingebrigtsen of Rapid Fire Theatre. Our winners were treated to on-the-spot interviews, never safe from the quick wit of Mr. Faid. But never fear, the musical stylings of Leif kept everyone in a good mood – or maybe it was the ample wine at the tables...

This year, we treated all those who purchased a table to a VIP experience! Six groups enjoyed a night of complementary champagne, concierge service and some of the best seats in the house. We’re not saying they had a better time than everyone else, we’re just saying you should definitely consider a table next year.

Finally, we'd like to take a moment to recognize this year's event sponsors. IABC Edmonton is a non-profit professional association, so lovely events like this year's Capital Awards are simply not possible without the support of our community. A big thank you to our sponsors:

 See you next year!
